Director of Development, Nutritional Sciences and Wellness, College of Agriculture & Life Sciences

General Position Summary

This position works under the direction of CALS Senior Director of Development and is part of CALS development and alumni team.

The Director of Development for Nutritional Sciences and Wellness will work to secure philanthropic support from alumni, parents and friends with the ability and affinity to make contributions of $25,000.00 or more directed to fund the priorities and programs identified for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This position is a member of the University Alumni Development Program (UADP) and subject to joint management by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the University of Arizona Foundation as specified in the Development Services and Asset Management Agreement dated August 2016.

Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Helps to support and promote a culture of philanthropy within the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness
  • Develop and actively manage a portfolio of 50-70 assigned prospects/donors. Develop personalized strategies for each as appropriate.
  • Develops partnership support for the CALS Wellness Campus.
  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits, and provides stewardship to selected major gift donors and prospects in consultation with the Senior Director of Development and Alumni Affairs.
  • Develops personalized strategies for all assigned donors and prospects that build, maintain, and enhance relationships while furthering donors’ philanthropic objectives.
  • Works with faculty to develop support for their programs.
  • After an initial 3-month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of at least 100 current or prospective donor meetings and the successful closure of 15+ major/principal gift proposals per year, with an expectation of $1M+ raised after the initial on-boarding period (with incremental increases after the first year).
  • Plans, coordinates, and schedules individual visits weekly utilizing prospect software (Lynx), introductory letters, emails, and phone calls to set appointments.
  • Maintains current and accurate records of donor prospects in the Lynx computer records system.
  • Supports alumni engagement and attends meetings/events for the College and University and Alumni Development Team with alumni, donors & friends as needed.
  • Provides direction for newsletters, invitations, brochures, and other publications/communications as needed.
  • Partners with, and effectively utilizes, the development professionals and resources of the UADP, including the offices of Development & University Campaigns; Regional Development; Gift Planning; Annual Giving (telephone, direct-mail, and e-solicitation services); Alumni and Constituent Engagement; Prospect Development; Financial Services; Information Services; and the Foundation Relations.
  • Utilizes the common systems, policies and procedures adhered to by UADP team members and embrace the UADP’s “One Team” culture and philosophy.
  • Creatively leverages outreach activities (e.g., tours, lectures, exhibits, etc.) to develop new major gift prospects.
  • After an initial 3- to 6-month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of 100+ current or prospect donor visits and presentation of 20+ proposals per year, with an expectation of $1M+ raised after the initial on-boarding period (with incremental increases after the first year).
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of development and fundraising principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Excel, Word, etc.
  • Knowledge of issues pertaining to agriculture and life sciences.
  • Knowledge of alumni affairs strategies.
  • Skills in organizing the work of self and others.
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud CRM fundraising system.
  • Outstanding interpersonal/relationship skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications.

  • Ability to understand and explain complex scientific research with prospects and donors.

  • Ability to make policy recommendations when necessary.

  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with donors, development colleagues and UA Faculty and staff.
  • Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
  • Ability to work with academic and administration staff members.
  • Experience building boards and committee structures.
  • Working knowledge of the ways donors can make charitable gifts, including cash, appreciated securities, real and personal property, charitable remainder trusts, bequests in a will or living trust, charitable gift annuities, etc.
  • Experience managing programs and special events.
  • Knowledge of organizational practice and governance.
  • Skills in organizing the work of self and others.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Excel, Word, etc.

Work Environment

  • This position will require travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions including overnight stays.
  • The Director of Development will be required to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university program AND
    Eight (8) years of development experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Experience working with volunteers, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Successful history of acquiring major and principal-level gifts ($1M+).
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
